Why play with cheap plastic when you can play with real clay chips? Serious card players prefer real clay chips because they stack solid, have a pleasant earthen-material texture, and feature a fantastic sound upon hitting the pot. This is a 540-piece set of vintage, compression-molded, clay poker chips. This is a mixed-mold set containing 500 Hat & Cane chips and 40 Horse Head chips. You will receive the exact chips shown in the photos. Paulsons are especially prized by chip enthusiasts for several reasons. They have a unique, full-bodied sound hitting the pot compared to most other clay chips. They have a softer, chalkier texture than most other clay chips. They stack great, even when well worn. And let us not forget rarity. Paulson ceased manufacturing home use poker chips in 2015. As a result, resale values for Paulson poker chips have skyrocketed in recent years. These chips are in very good condition considering that they, judging from every clue available, are over 50 years old. These particular Paulsons are good, old-fashioned, heavy clay chips that have seen moderate use. The Horse Heads are lighter and have seen little, if any, play. The chips in this set have square to mostly square edges. The Hat & Cane chips stack great; the Horse Head chips stack well enough. Most hot stamps are easily readable, with the blue chips a bit more worn than other colors. The chips could use a cleaning but are not too dirty. Even though there are two molds in this set, they clearly are meant to be part of the same set with the same RUS initials on both molds. This is a fully playable set of vintage clay chips. This set was built with 8 players in mind but can easily be stretched to 10 players. Top Hat & Cane Chips (500 Count). Paul-son Gaming Supplies (later Paulson, now GPI). Hat & Cane, Short Cane Version (MD-76). Compression Molded Clay Chips. Probably 1965 Paulson began use of the short version H&C mold in 1965. The horse head chips have left-facing heads, which ceased production in 1965, and appear to be an add-on to the set. Average weight by color: Red 10.6g, Blue 10.1g, Yellow 10.4g. Weights are averaged over four 10-chip samples for each color. Overall condition: Average (A) to Slightly Used (SU). Red & Yellow tend towards SU, Blues tend towards A. Reds & yellows have moderate to good cross hatching. Blues have mostly worn cross hatching. Good friction between chips. Chips have a slightly grippy feel, but are worn-in enough to shuffle nicely. Barrels of 20 effortlessly push into the middle. Horse Head Chips (40 Count). Paul-son, or their predecessor company Cristy Jones. Horse Head Left (MD-66). This is the older, rarer horse head mold. Probably 1965the Horse Head Left mold was in production from 1950s to 1965. The Hat & Cane chips that dominate the set are the short version, which began production in 1965. Based upon average weights from two 10-chip. Condition: Slightly Used (SU). These chips could better be described as: Near Mint. Cross hatching is present, with only minor scuffs/wear. Friction between chips is acceptable but not great typical of 1960s clays. Edges are sharp, chips are a little hard to shuffle. Barrels of 20 push easily into the middle. In addition to the chips, you will also receive the following items shown in the photos. A 500-capacity, aluminum poker chip case (brand new). 2 decks of Copag 100% plastic playing cards (used in the 2017 World Series of Poker). A dealer button set. Note: while the case is officially 500-chip capacity, the pictures show 50 Hat & Canes + 4 Horse Heads to a row (except for the far-right row, which only had room for 3 Horse Heads; the extra chip is stored by the cards).
